CONSTRUCTION

PLYWOOD.CH skis are handmade masterpieces of craftmanship. All our skis are sandwich constructions, consisting of at least 10 different layers. Every single ski is made of more than 20 components. This way of construction is key to the incomparable performance of our products.
Each pair is wet laminated with epoxy resin and stays in the press for 24h. This allows the resin to fully cure in the press and thereby decreases internal tensions within the ski in comparison to heated presses used in mass production.

TECHNOLOGY

In line with “Back to the Woods” PLYWOOD.CH uses real wood as topsheet and full lenght woodcores. We only use local, sustainably harvested wood. The woodcore is the heart of every ski. It determines the distribution of the flex along the deflection curve. Our woodcores provide the optimal combination of weight, flex and strenght.

We use sinthered P-Tex Electra 4000 with carbon additives on all of our skis. This is the thoughest base material available and provides an outstanding mix of durability and low friction. To create an even gliding surface our skis come without die-cut grafics – plain black for maximum strenght and speed.

Our topsheets come with a polished beeswax finish. This treatment perfectly seals the surface. The proprietary beeswax formula was fully developed inhouse to offer the best protection of our topsheets.

We use 2.2 x 2.0mm steel edges made out of carbon steel C67S. This material provides a high load-bearing capacity and stability in combination with a decreased risk of breakage.

Our skis contain different types of fibre composites. To modulate torsional stiffness we use biaxial fibreglass where the fibres run in +-45° direction. The longitudinal stiffness of a ski and the flex are regulated by the use of unidirectional 0° fibreglass layers.

C6 Carbon fabric over the full width and lenght of the ski provides incredible flex and pop and accounts for a very direct response of the ski.

Special carbon reinforcements make you ski like on rails. For enhanced edgegrip a ribbon of unidirectional carbon follows each edge. This carbon rail helps to distribute the resulting forces evenly along the whole lenght of the ski and provides superior edgehold and edge control.

Full cycle curing means that each pair of skis stays in the press for 24h. This allows the resin to fully cure in the press and thereby decreases internal tension and stress within the ski. The result is a stronger ski with a longer life.

The VibrationDampeningSystem VDS consists of layers of elastomer material. This construction absorbs energy and damps the oscillation within the ski.

Flat Powder is how we call our superior camber profile for the freeride range. Our profile quickly adapts to the conditions, changing from a preloaded, flat and stable platform with excellent edgehold on hardpack to a slightly reverse camber for optimal floatation in powder.

PLYWOOD.CH builds some twintips. To stay true to the concept of twintips, ours are completely symmetrical in shape with a slightly stiffer flex in the tail to get you off the ground faster.

Our freeride touring construction offers everything you need to get up and down fast. A light and rigid ski that is easy on the ascent and supports you in long traverses combined with a shape that keeps you afloat no matter how deep and steep it gets.

The big mountain construction was developed for speed, stability and the big turns. The skis that carry this label are rock solid. Their stiff setup offers unmatched performance when things get rough and gnarly – skis you can fully rely on.

Each Ski is handmade with utmost care. Skibuilding is a labour-intensive process. Thanks to our skilled skibuilding experts we keep the quality of our products on a consistent and extremely high level.

At PLYWOOD.CH we care about the CH. Local manufacturing and local sourcing mean short transportation routes, quick reaction times and full control of the whole supply chain. That`s why we like to keep our suppliers close and that`s why we set up our own production facility in Switzerland.

ENVIRONMENT

Let`s face reality: The production of skis is a non-reversible process. Once all the materials required for construction are coated with glue they stick together beyond the end of the product life cycle. Up to date it`s technically not possible to revert this process and to properly recycle a ski/snowboard. At the end of its life cycle our sports equipment is waste and the resources used for its construction are lost forever.

energy_input_final-01

Not even we at PLYWOOD.CH found a way to solve this issue yet. Until we do we focus on reducing the footprint of our skis by minimizing the resources used up in their building. The construction of a ski at PLYWOOD.CH consumes approx. 35% less energy compared to a conventionally produced ski.
This reduction is achieved by applying more energy efficient processes and by replacing artificial and energy intensive materials by natural ones.By using wood as natural and renewable ressource we are able to replace more than 1.2kg of petroleum based plastics in the making of a pair of ski in comparison to mass produced skis.

Additionally metal is only used for the edges. PLYWOOD.CH avoids the use of titanal and other metals in the construction of our skis as most surface treat-ments to improve their bonding characteristics are environmentally hazardous.
Finally, we use non heated ski presses. They allow for a more gentle pressing, thereby increasing the quality of our skis and at the same time they cut the energy input needed for pressing to an absolute minimum.
